A Show with Jan Croteau Opening August 6

Jan Croteau will be filling the gallery with her expressive paintings for a solo show beginning August 6. She will have an opening reception that evening from 5:30-8:30.

Jan will also be offering workshops during her show, which will continue through August 21. Azure Rising Gallery will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 during Jan’s show.

Workshops on Rendering Life on the Page

Workshop 1  Thursday Aug 11, 6:30 to 8:30

Sketch book inspiration using pen, ink and watercolor. How to distill a scene quickly, capture a face or render a moment in time. We will also touch upon using our sketches as writing prompts. And how to make our voices shine on the page.

Workshop 2  Thursday Aug, 18, 6:30 to 8:30

Bring your sketchbook and learn how to tell your story using your art as a writing prompt. I will share my own writings and bring the paintings that inspired them. We will then write using our sketches as inspiration.

Local artist GABE SMITH is a self-taught, non-traditional artist who uses a variety of mediums and surfaces, rarely using brushes, instead opting to use a vibrant combination of colorful spray paints, fluorescent acrylics, metals, plastics, L.E.Ds and wax. His work is universal and abstract in nature with a focus on space and time. Gabe explains his work this way: “Some of my work is created in a complex process of layering multiple paintings which include hidden parts that appear to glow, depending on the lighting of the room and time of day the piece is viewed. The show is called, “WHITE” and is dedicated to fans of my art and music that have been with me from the beginning of my career, people I call ‘Citizens of the Gray Planet’ who are just a little different and who struggle with many of the labels placed on them…they are in between – or Gray!”

Gabe concentrated on graphic arts at Spaulding High School and graduated in 2010. He competed in the Gutenberg Awards competition and won the award for Multi-color Lithography in 2009. Gabe has participated in the “Art at the Gafney” fundraiser for the past 6 years, donating a piece of work each year. Gabe spends most of his time at his studio in the lakes region working with the young people in the area who struggle with depression, heroin abuse and suicide. Bringing a positive message through his art and electronic music.

STARTING OFF THIS SUMMER WITH

VALERIE  SCHURER CHRISTLE

fabric piece by Valerie Christle

the oak, the ash and the thorn

is showing a selection of art at Azure Rising gallery,
June 4-14.
Well known for the wide range of media that she works with, Valerie has chosen to focus on just one medium for this show, fabric.
Cosy quilts, some subtle, others just dancing with color echo the traditional, yet feel contemporary with the joyful selections of patterns and color.
Valerie has been influenced by the paintings of Klimt and Schiele in her newest landscapes. Representations are digitilized, not by computer, but by Valerie translating the images on to graph paper then finding the right fabrics to represent trees, bushes and grass. These hand pieced patches (usually 1”square) are then quilted by hand, rendering another layer of texture to the work.
The artist questions herself, is this show a trunk show, a retrospective? It is true that there are pieces in the show that have been shown before, but it feels like a celebration of a craft to see so many pieces hanging happily together.
Valerie hopes that you will stop by and enjoy the show. She will be working on new pieces while gallery sitting.

Hours are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11-4 from June 4-14.
